Ask The Vet - Q&A

Question
My dog’s behaviour seems to have changed significantly recently. She is weeing and cowering whenever any of us go near her. She is also yelping whenever she plays ball, but is fine when running and walking. We think it is something to do with her stomach but we are not sure.
Kirstie - Northampton, England
Question
I have a 13 year old castrated border terrier. Since coming back from the groomers after being hand stripped for the summer he has started to loose clumps of fur from his hind quarters and both flanks. He is not scratching or licking these areas and his skin looks healthy - maybe a little flakey in patches. He is up to date with both Frontline and Drontal. Any suggestions what it could be? I have been bathing him with anti-bacterial shampoo from my vets, which has not helped to date.
Katy Quinn - Hertfordshire, England
Question
Our 6 month old Jack Russell bitch is not very good at car travel. Any suggestions or remedies?
Pam Mills - Powys, UK
Question
Our dog drinks excessive amounts of water. We let him out regularly to relieve himself but sometime she toilets in the house because he doesn’t let us know that he needs to go out. Is this normal?
Diane - Canada
Question
We took our new puppy to the low cost clinic for his second shot. Last night I was rubbing his back and felt a bubble down from his neck. Could that be from the shot?
Jeff Warner - CA, USA
Question
I have a 18 week old German Shepherd puppy. I noticed that on her front bottom teeth she has the new adult tooth which is in, but the baby tooth is pushed in front and has not come out yet. Do I need to get her into our vet to have it removed? She just started to teethe this week.
Joyce - Texas, USA
Question
I have a Boston Terrier that is almost 15 months old. He has 2 brothers that are cats. On Wednesday I noticed he has a reddish bump (it looks like a pimple without the white head) under his nose and about his lips. When I touch it, it doesn’t seem to bother him. What is it and do I need to be concerned about taking him to the vet?
Nesli Katolin - VA, USA
Question
Could you please tell me how soon I can get a new puppy after losing one to Parvo? We had a 10 week old puppy for only 2 days. We took her to the vets because she was not eating etc. and she tested positive for Parvo.
Sarah Reynolds - West Midlands, England
Question
I have a cavalier king charles spaniel bitch who is currently on an obesity management diet as our vet considers her to be overweight. She is currently 9.25 kilos in weight and the vet would like her ideally to get to about 8.5 kilos. We have a friend who breeds cavalier charles spaniels and their dog is 10.5 kilos in weight and she says that is acceptable for that breed. Can you give me any further advice? Do you think my vet is right with this obesity management diet or should we not worry about weight gain like the breeder?
Brydon Dickson - Midlothian, Scotland
Question
Do you consider it safe for an owner to try to de-scale a dog’s teeth themselves?
Janet Truman - Derby, England
Question
My dog Teddy has had a nose bleed for a few days off and on. I can get it to stop for a while and then it will start up again. The blood is really bright red. He is 5 years old a mix of retriever, shepard, and chow. He is still eating normally, but acting just a little lethargic.
Kim Mansfield - Elizabeth/CO, USA
Question
I have a 9 year old golden reteiver. He started to be sick on Monday. I took him to the vets and they put him on a drip and gave him antibiotics. He was at the vets for 3 days. He stopped being sick but was still very ill. They did blood test but every thing came back OK. They have told us he has an enlarged heart but they have not done an x-ray or any scans. They have sent him home with heart tablets. I am concerned that this is the wrong diagnosis because he does not have any of the symptoms for an enlarged heart. He had a temperature, was vomiting, drinking a lot and had low blood pressure.
Gillian Jones - County Durham, UK
Question
I have a 6 year old Patterdale Terrier. His faeces are quite runny all the time. Is this a dietary problem?
Christine Kot - North Humberside, England
Question
I had a lovely dog named Sasha for 14 good years. I know she had a good age, but she had a lot of life still in her. On 28 December 2007, Sasha had a slight fall. The vet checked her gums and temperature and said there was no signs of bleeding, only maybe some muscule pain. An injection was given, she was fine. Then about 2 weeks later Sasha began to chatter her teeth like she was cold. The vet said old dogs can do this. A week or so later Sasha began to not want to eat, and not want to exercise. The vet said she had a tumour on her spleen, which was bleeding into her belly. They found about 10 tumours, each about the size of a 50 pence piece, but the main tumour was about the size of a tennis ball. The vet told me there was no way to save her. Could the small fall have started this just over 3 weeks before? The vet said no but I need to know if it’s my fault and I need a honest answer.
Barbara - Stoke, UK

Question
My dog has an ear infection (something that he has had before and has aurizon drops) but my vet's will not give me another prescription unless they see him first as it is more that their 3 month deadline (I find this unfair as it will cost me £20 plus for the pleasure of telling me what I already know. Is there anyway that I can get a prescription without him seeing a vet? After breeding dogs for a number of years I know what an ear infection looks and smells like.
Vanessa Davis - Pembrokeshire, Wales

My 12 year old bearded collie dog is very happy and healthy but appears to be going blind. Her eyes appear cloudy. Is this cataracts? Should I be doing anything to try and rectify this or should I leave her since she is very happy and loves life and long walks. She has so much energy, she certainly doesn't appear her age. However she also appears to be going deaf.
Christine Soutar – Essex, UK

I have a 16 week old Dogue de Bordeaux puppy who is very unresponsive to our calls and doesn't even look at us when we call her. I am wondering if she is deaf? We have two boxer dogs, one is 5 years old and the other 7 months. Boston who is 5 years has got like a boil on his paw. It has been seeping or oozing a light yellow/clear fluid. It is in between his claws. I have put liverine on it but it doesn’t seem to be taking it down any.

Question
I have a small Puggle girl dog. She was recently running outside where we just had new windows put in and came in bleeding with small slice on the bottom of her paw. I put some peroxide on the cut and the bleeding stopped. I looked inside the cut and it looks like there might be a small piece of glass inside it. Question
My 4 year old GSD bitch Sheba has been diagnosed with anal furunculosis 2 weeks ago. She has been on antibiotics, 4 tablets a day of amtiriod 150mg. The vet wants to operate but I dont want her to have to go through the surgery and she will be put on steriods for the rest of her life! The steriods will slowly kill her. I would like to know if there is any other option or the most humane thing to do.
Paul Mercer - Preston
Question
My 7 year old sheppard collie mix has recently begun to pant a lot and gestures as if she needs to have a bowel movement. Question

Barbara - Sheppey, Kent, UK
Question
My dog, who is 12 years old, keeps on vomiting. I have changed her diet and taken her to my vet. He prescribed antibiotics twice and took a blood test of her major organs and all is well. The vet thinks it’s her trachea but I have done all that he has suggested and she really is not well.
Sarah - Worthing
Question
I am a disabled person and spend 95% of my time at home with my pet poodle. She is 7 months old. However, when I do go out I put her in a crate. When I come back usually within a couple of hours, I find she has been licking or chewing her front paws, and is quite wet. I assume this is a separation anxiety behaviour, but I do not know what to do about it. As I am around so much and cannot go out often I am at a loss with this problem.
Sandra Levette - Grimsby, UK
Question
My 12 month old toy poodle had a hernia repair and castration 5 days ago. Since then he has been extremely lethargic, off his food (although will eat very small amounts) and generally 'not himself'. He does not have a temperature, his nose is cold and his gums are pink. There is no obvious infection of his wounds. His behaviour is so out of character and I had expected more of a recovery by now. Is this normal or should I be more worried than I am?
Jane - Oldham
Question
My 11 week old puppy got his front leg caught in a door. He limps with it instead of hopping without it so I don’t think it is broken, but his paw area just hangs there when he sits up on his hind legs. Should I do anything?
Teresa - Mesa, AZ
Question
We have just got a female Leonberger puppy called Saffi. We already have a five year old entire male Leonberger called Bex. We would like your opinion on having Saffi spayed before she comes into season.

Question
I've got a 9 year old Dobermann and he's got a split claw on one of his back feet. Will this cause any problems? He walks and runs OK but it does bleed a little and he licks it to keep it clean.
M. Jepson - Nottinghamshire, UK
Question
My boxer dog has damaged a small area in her eye which looks like a scratch around the centre of her eye. We think that whilst we were walking in the park she ran into some bushes and a branch may have caused the scratch on her eye ball. She doesn't seem to be in any pain but squints her eye a lot, especially in the mornings and after she has had a sleep. Do you think this will this heal on its own? She doesn't like going to the vet and finds it distressing.
Claudia Parr - Liverpool, UK
Question
My dog is doing a lot of scratching and nibbling of himself. He has been treated for fleas and worms. I have gone over him with a flea comb just to be sure and can't find anything. I have also checked for any skin irritation and can see nothing. Have you any idea what I can do for him as it is making him miserable.
Sharron - Lancashire, UK

Charlotte Chase - Lincolnshire, UK
Question
My Cross breed dog is nearly 15 years old and keeps walking around the edges of rooms and sitting as far pushed into corners as she can. Also when there is a loud noise she runs outside. I gather this is to do with loss of hearing. Medically what can we do to help?
Ann Hotchkiss - Perth, Scotland
Question
I have an 8 year old Jack Russell who has always been wormed and flea treated. My friend also has the above, but has never had her dog wormed on the advice of her vet who said that this is not necessary because she has flea treatment (Stronghold). Why is this, and why do I have to do both for my dog? We use Drontall worming and Frontline flea treatment.
Julie Kershaw - London
Question
My dog sometimes has fits. They do not affect her mind, only her body, and she does not have them very often. After a recent fit she had bouts of strange behaviour. She walks strangely and stiffly, lies down, shivers and wants to sleep. This comes and goes i.e. she is fine one minute and then acting strange the next. Previously, the vet could not find anything wrong. Any ideas?

I have a 2 year old male Jack Russell/chihuahua mix. We also have a female cat. Recently our dog, Max stopped eating his dog food. We have tried several brands, and both dry and canned.
