Vet Help Direct is an interactive website designed and run by qualified vets. Step-by-step questions help you to decide if you need to take your pet to the vets, and if so how urgently.

If your dog isn't insured yet, find out what vets recommend you look into when choosing a policy. There is a directory of pet insurers so that you can then find the best policy for you and your dog. If you aren't already registered with a vet in your area there is a directory of local vet practices. Visit www.vethelpdirect.com

Ask The Vet - Q&A
Question

I have a 2 year old male Jack Russell/chihuahua mix. We also have a female cat. Recently our dog, Max stopped eating his dog food. We have tried several brands, and both dry and canned. Sometimes he will take a few bites, but that is it. He used to eat like crazy! He is so thin now you can see his spine poking out. I am worried!

Answer
Hi Nancy,

I'm sorry to hear that Max has gone of his food and started to loose weight.

You really need to take Max to the vet urgently. It is normal for some dogs to be a bit picky with their food, but I'm worried about Max because he is loosing weight and from what you have said it sounds like he could be seriously underweight.

Get an appointment with your vet as soon as you can.

It will help the vet if you have a really good think about how Max has been recently. Have you noticed any other changes, for example: Has he been drinking normally? Has he had any diarrhoea or vomiting, if so how frequently? Have you noticed him coughing? Has he been as energetic as usual? Has he been urinating normally?

When you go to the vets take with you:

1) A fresh urine sample collected from Max
2) A fresh faeces sample if he has diarrhoea
3) Records of his vaccinations
4) Records of any preventative treatment eg worming, flea treatment
5) Any records of his weight previously
6) A list of the foods you have offered him

I hope that this helps. Please do not delay in contacting your vet.

Kind regards,

Susie Samuel MA VetMB MRCVS www.vethelpdirect.com
