Question
I have a 4 month old Shar Pei who has a very strong doggy
odour. I bath him frequently, maybe too frequent, but he still stinks.
What can I do? Are there any magic products for this problem?

Hi
Rena,
Unfortunately there are no magic products to get rid of doggy odour.
Obviously to some extent it can be normal for dogs to smell a little
doggy! If the smell is strong, as you describe it, is possible that
there is an underlying cause for the smell.
Teeth
problems, incorrect diet, anal gland impactions, worms, tummy upsets
and several more unusual factors can all cause unpleasant odours.
Check
your puppy's worming routine and diet. Puppies need to be wormed
frequently, usually every month, but check on the individual recommendations
that your vet gave you. You should also check with your vet that
the worming medication you are using is appropriate for your puppy.
The
best diet for a puppy is usually a commercially available puppy
food. With the good brands, nutritionists will have spend a lot
of time devising a diet that is completely balanced and appropriate
for a puppy. They will have used all the latest research to do this.
You are extremely unlikely to be able to do a better job yourself
with a home made diet. It is very important not to feed raw meat
to dogs, they can pick up nasty bugs such as campylobacter just
as humans can.
When
you have checked up on your puppy's diet and worming schedule you
need to take him to the vets for a check up. Your vets will be able
to rule out mouth, anal gland or other problems that could be causing
the unpleasant odour. Good luck with sorting this out and I hope
you have a fresh smelling puppy very soon.
