Question
My dog has had diarrhoea for 3 days now. She’s hardly
eating or drinking and is sleeping a lot. Should we take her to
see the vet?

Hi Kerry,
Yes!
You need to take your dog to the vets URGENTLY. When a dog has diarrhoea
they loose a lot of water in their faeces, even if a dog is eating
and drinking normally and this can quickly lead to serious dehydration.
Your dog isn’t eating or drinking which means that she is
almost certainly dehydrated. This is the beginning of a downward
cycle – the more dehydrated she becomes, the more poorly she
will feel and the less she will feel like eating or drinking.
Dehydration
can cause severe damage to the body and is life threatening. You
need to take your dog to the vets so that they can assess the situation.
Your dog may well need to have fluids given by a drip into the vein.
She may also require some investigations or treatment for the cause
of the diarrhoea.
For
future reference, dogs with diarrhoea that are off colour should
be taken to the vets as soon as possible, as should dogs with diarrhoea
that has blood in it or diarrhoea that is watery. Caught early the
unpleasant effects of dehydration can usually be prevented. If you
are not sure in the future if your dog needs to be seen by a vet
try using www.vethelpdirect.com.
Please
take your dog to the vets straight away! I hope she feels better
soon.
Kind regards,
