I have recently started cooking for my dog. Most recipes
call for garlic powder. Is this safe?

Hi Kirsty,
Garlic
is poisonous for dogs and garlic powder should certainly not be
included in any meal cooked for a dog. Small amounts of onions and
garlic can cause red blood cells to be destroyed in the blood vessels,
causing anaemia which can be fatal or, in the very mild form, lead
to low energy levels. Garlic can also cause problems in the intestines
leading to vomiting and diarrhoea.
It
is very difficult to make a completely balanced home made diet for
a dog. The diet must be tailored to age, breed and lifestyle and
needs to be correctly balanced for energy, proteins, carbohydrates,
essential fats, vitamins and minerals. You need to get veterinary
advice before trying to do this. An easy way around the problem
is to feed a good brand of complete dog food, the reputable companies
put a lot of research into getting the nutritional balance of their
food exactly right for different types of dogs. The food also comes
with guidelines for how much to feed reducing the likelyhood of
obesity or underfeeding.
Kind regards,
