Question
We have two boxer dogs, one is 5 years old and the other
7 months. Boston who is 5 years has got like a boil on his paw.
It has been seeping or oozing a light yellow/clear fluid. It is
in between his claws. I have put liverine on it but it doesn’t
seem to be taking it down any.

Hi Peter,
Unfortunately
you do need to take your dog to the vet. It sounds as though the
‘boil’ could be infected and it is very possible that
something is lodged inside it, for example, grass seeds often find
their way into these areas. This is quite a common problem, particularly
this time of the year. Grass seeds can cause really nasty problems.
They have sharp heads that can penetrate the skin and tiny barbs
that stop them moving backwards but allow them to move forwards,
deeper into the tissue. If this turns out to be the problem, surgery
under anaesthetic is often necessary to remove the seed. There are
other possible causes of the sort of lesion you describe. Your vet
will be able to give you a more accurate idea of the likely causes.
Until
you go to the vets, bathe the boil twice daily with boiled, cooled
salty water (one teaspoon of salt in a big bowl of water). Dry thoroughly
and do not allow your dog to lick at it as it will introduce infections.
If you are having problems stopping your dog from licking at the
wound you can put a clean sock over the foot or if you have an Elizabethan
(Buster) collar you can put this on your dog until you can get to
the vets.
Kind regards,
