Question
My obese 10 year old beagle is peeing a lot and can't hold
it. Is this a bladder infection or kidney failure?

Hi
Matthew,
You are quite right that peeing a lot can be a sign of bladder infection
or kidney failure. There are also quite a few other conditions that
can cause this problem.
Bladder
infections make dogs want to pee a lot as the inflammation in the
bladder makes them think that they need to empty their bladder even
when it is not full. With a bladder infection or ‘cystitis’
dogs tend to urinate little and often.
Kidney
failure makes dogs urinate a lot as they are producing more urine
than usual. The bladder functions normally holding the urine in,
but it fills up more quickly than usual so the dog will need to
go more frequently. In kidney failure dogs tend to urinate a large
volume when they go.
There
are a variety of other conditions that can make dogs pee more frequently
either due to producing more urine than usual or due to problems
in the bladder. Your dog needs fairly prompt veterinary attention.
If you can collect a urine sample to take with you, this will help
the vet to reach a diagnosis.
Kind regards,
