Ask the vet

In Association with Vet Help Direct - an interactive website designed and run by qualified vets. Step-by-step questions help you to decide if you need to take your pet to the vets, and if so how urgently.

If your dog isn't insured yet, find out what vets recommend you look into when choosing a policy. There is a directory of pet insurers so that you can then find the best policy for you and your dog. If you aren't already registered with a vet in your area there is a directory of local vet practices. Visit www.vethelpdirect.com

Ask The Vet - Q&A
Question

My dog is about 1 year old and is suffering with bad ears. I took her to the local vet and he gave me ear drops, but she is still suffering and is rubbing her head on the carpet. Is there anything else I can use to help ease her suffering?

Answer
Hi Wayne,

Thanks for your question. Ear infections can sometimes be quite difficult to get rid of. You need to take your dog back to the vets. If the vet can see a significant improvement they may decide to continue with the same treatment for a bit longer. If there does not seem to be much improvement they may want to take a swab which will help to establish which bacteria are causing the infection, and which antibiotics they are sensitive to.

In some ear infections a lot of discharge and debris builds up inside the ear. Bacteria can hide away in the discharge and are then protected from the antibiotics so the infection does not go away with treatment. In this case dogs need their ears flushing out under anaesthetic. Ears may need to be flushed on several occasions in severe infections.

Skin problems can also cause recurrent ear infections. The skin inside the ear canal can become itchy due to allergies just like the skin elsewhere on the body. Inside the ear the environment is warm and damp and secondary infections can develop very easily. If you find the ear infection does keep coming back your vet may want to perform some tests to find out if there is an underlying skin problem.

The most important thing is to make sure that you continue with treatment and seeing the vet until they have looked down the ear and it is 100% better. If ear infections are left to grumble on long term they can cause narrowing of the ear canal which can cause dogs to have further ear infections throughout their life.

Kind regards,
