Question
Please can you help as I am really too ashamed to take
my golden retriever to the vets as she looks so poorly. I fear she
may have demodex (demodectic mange). I have tried all types of medicines,
herbal types, changed her food etc. but she isn’t getting
better.

Hi
Ros,
Please
take your dog to the vets straight away. If it is mange it could
be sarcoptic mange which is excruciatingly itchy and painful for
dogs. This does not go away on its own and will probably just get
worse without treatment. The only way to get rid of it is with prescription
only medicines. For this you will need a prescription from a vet
that has actually seen your dog. The good thing is that it is completely
and easily curable so you really must get your dog to the vets ASAP.
If
it doesn’t turn out to be mange it never the less sounds like
your dog is in urgent need of a vet. Don’t worry about your
vet’s reaction. You could try explaining the situation to
the receptionist beforehand or ask for a home visit. The vet would
much rather see you now than further down the line when things have
potentially got even worse. Please do not give any more herbal medicines
without veterinary guidance; many herbal medicines contain powerful
drugs and some herbs that are safe for humans are very dangerous
for dogs.
Good
luck with this and please.... go to the vets now!
Kind regards,
