Question
My puppy finished his course of vaccinations a week ago.
The vets told me he must be kept in for a period of two weeks but
other vets have said it should be one week only. When will I be
able to walk him?

Hi
Virginia,
Thanks
for your question. The period after vaccination before puppies can
be taken outside gives the immune system time to respond fully to
the vaccine. It is important to make sure that this period of time
is adequate before the puppy is taken outside and potentially exposed
to diseases.
There
are several different brands of vaccine available – they all
protect dogs from the same mixture of life threatening diseases
but they vary in how they are made. Each manufacturer has its own
recommendations for their particular vaccine as to how long it should
be before dogs are allowed out. You should therefore take the advice
of the vet that gave your dog the vaccination as they will be giving
you specific advice for the vaccine given. If you have received
conflicting advice at the same vet practice you should make the
practice aware of this and they should be happy to clear this up
for you.
Enjoy
your puppy and have a great time taking him on his first walk when
it is safe to do so.
Kind regards,
Susie Samuel MA VetMB MRCVS www.vethelpdirect.com
