I'm getting my pet spayed (fixed). When I bring her home
can I give her human aspirin for the pain?

Hi
Audra,
Spaying usually involves the removal of the uterus and ovaries which
is obviously quite major surgery. You are absolutely right to be
thinking about pain relief for your bitch after the operation.
Aspirin
is not licensed for dogs. This means it has not been through the
extensive safety testing that licensed drugs go through. It is also
known that aspirin can have dangerous side effects in dogs so I
would strongly advise you not to give aspirin to your dog.
Aspirin
is a ‘non steroidal anti-inflammatory’ or ‘NSAID’.
Years ago people used to give it to dogs as it was the only pain
relief available. Today there is a variety of more advanced NSAID
drugs that have been licensed for dogs, for example meloxicam and
carprofen. These drugs are prescription only so your vet will need
to give them to you, or, issue you with a prescription. NSAIDS provide
valuable pain relief for animals but, as with humans, even licensed
NSAIDS can sometimes have side effects. In a healthy animal this
is very uncommon.
Have
a chat with your vet about the pain relief that will be provided
at the spay. Typically an animal will receive an opiod type and
NSAID injection before or during the operation and then, in most
cases, receive some NSAID painkiller tablets to take at home. The
regime will need to be tailored to your dog’s health and sensitivity
to pain.
By
spaying your bitch you are protecting her from the life threatening
condition of ‘Pyometra’ or infected womb and cancers
of the womb. You are also giving her some protection against mammary
cancer. You are doing her a great favour even though it may be a
difficult few days around the operation.
Kind regards,
