Ask the vet

In Association with Vet Help Direct - an interactive website designed and run by qualified vets. Step-by-step questions help you to decide if you need to take your pet to the vets, and if so how urgently.

If your dog isn't insured yet, find out what vets recommend you look into when choosing a policy. There is a directory of pet insurers so that you can then find the best policy for you and your dog. If you aren't already registered with a vet in your area there is a directory of local vet practices. Visit www.vethelpdirect.com

Ask The Vet - Q&A
Question

My dog is fully house trained but recently she has started weeing all over the house and on the furniture. She never even did this when she was a pup. My dad's girlfriend has recently moved in with her 2 kids. Could this be connected? Please help as they wanna get rid of her.

Answer
Hi Clare,

Thanks for your email. It can be very difficult to cope when dogs go to the toilet around the house, especially when there are children around. Sudden changes in behaviour like this can be caused by a change in living circumstances as you have described. More commonly, when dogs suddenly start weeing around the house it is caused by bladder inflammation or ‘cystitis’. Other causes can be kidney problems, diabetes, cushings disease or other problems with the bladder.

It is vital that you take your dog to the vets as soon as possible to check that there are no health problems causing her to wee in the house. Before you go to the vets you should do two things to ensure that you get the most from the consultation: First measure her water intake over 24 hours. To do this measure the amount of water when you fill her bowl, and when you change her water measure how much is left. Secondly collect a urine sample in a plastic water bottle.

With luck the problem will be caused by a straight forward case of cystitis which will get better very quickly with treatment. If health problems are ruled out ask your vet to put you in touch with a pet behaviour therapist who should be able to help.

Good luck with this.

Kind regards,

Susie Samuel MA VetMB MRCVS www.vethelpdirect.com
