Question
I have a 6 year old Patterdale Terrier. His faeces are
quite runny all the time. Is this a dietary problem?

Hi
Christine,
I
also have a Patterdale (cross-bred) Terrier. They are little characters!
You can see a picture of him on the main ‘Ask a Vet’
page.
Your
dog should not be producing runny faeces all the time if you are
feeding a balanced diet (e.g. a good brand of complete dog food).
You need to take him to your vets for a check up.
Before
the visit make sure you have details of when your dog was last wormed,
and the product used and make a note of the volume and type of food
you have been feeding him. Have a good think to make sure that you
have not noticed any other signs of ill health, or changes in his
behaviour. You could also take a sample of the faeces with you so
that your vet can see how runny it is. They may wish to send the
sample for ‘culture and sensitivity’, so you should
take a fresh sample, or else keep it in the fridge until your visit.
I usually recommend putting faeces samples in a clean, empty ice
cream type box and then using several plastic bags to keep things
hygienic in the fridge.
Until
you get him to the vets I would recommend temporarily feeding bland
food. You could try boiled chicken (no skin or bones) and boiled
white rice. This is not a balanced long term diet but it is fine
in the short term to settle the tummy. Give several small meals
a day, rather than one big meal.
Kind regards,
