Question
My dog Teddy has had a nose bleed for a few days off and
on. I can get it to stop for a while and then it will start up again.
The blood is really bright red. He is 5 years old a mix of retriever,
shepard, and chow. He is still eating normally, but acting just
a little lethargic.

Hi
Kim,
Nose bleeds are not as common in dogs as they are in humans and
I am concerned that Teddy may have an underlying problem. It is
very important that you take him to the vets to get him checked
out.
'Trauma'
to the nose can cause nose bleeds but, if this was the cause of
Teddy’s problems, I would have expected the bleeding to have
stopped by now. Most nose bleeds are caused by problems within the
nose itself, but other general health problems such as high blood
pressure and blood clotting disorders can also be responsible.
You
should get Teddy to the vets as soon as you can. Until the appointment
keep him under close observation. If the bleeding starts again keep
him calm and still and encourage him to lower his nose so that he
doesn’t choke. If the blood is coming out any more than just
a few drops at a time, or if the bleeding does not stop after 5
minutes you should contact your vet urgently whatever time of the
day or night.
Kind regards,
Susie Samuel MA VetMB MRCVS www.vethelpdirect.com
