Question
Could you please tell me how soon I can get a new puppy
after losing one to Parvo? We had a 10 week old puppy for only 2
days. We took her to the vets because she was not eating etc. and
she tested positive for Parvo.

Hi
Sarah,
I
am so sorry to hear about your poor puppy. It must have been extremely
upsetting for you and your family. Parvovirus is a really nasty
disease that is thankfully uncommon in the UK due to widespread
vaccination, however it does seem to be making a bit of a come back
at the moment. Your puppy was unlucky enough to contract the virus
before she was protected by her vaccinations.
Parvovirus
can survive in the environment for months. The exact time is not
known. The virus can be killed with diluted bleach (1 part bleach
to 32 parts water). To be as safe as possible I would advise thoroughly
disinfecting all areas of the house and garden with the diluted
bleach. I would then wait for a few months before bringing a new
puppy home, possibly disinfecting again before you do.
When
you get the new puppy, I would recommend waiting until it has had
its full course of vaccinations before bringing it home. Talk to
your vet about the best course of vaccination for your new puppy
to follow. As there is an increased risk to your new puppy they
may wish to give additional doses of the vaccine until the puppy
is 18 weeks of age.
Obviously
do not let anyone else bring their dog to your house until you have
thoroughly disinfected. Occasionally dogs can contract Parvovirus
despite being vaccinated, although this is very uncommon.
I
do hope that everything goes well when you do get your new puppy.
Kind regards,
