Question
I have a Boston Terrier that is almost 15 months old. He
has 2 brothers that are cats. On Wednesday I noticed he has a reddish
bump (it looks like a pimple without the white head) under his nose
and about his lips. When I touch it, it doesn’t seem to bother
him. What is it and do I need to be concerned about taking him to
the vet?

Hi
Nesli,
Thanks
for your question. Reddish bumps can occur for a number of reasons.
The most common two would probably be inflammation or a growth of
some description. You mention that your terrier lives with two cats
and I wonder if you are suspicious that one of the cats has scratched
your dog? This could cause a red bump to form if the wound became
infected. If the bump does turn out to be a growth the most common
type would be a wart or other benign growth. As your dog is so young
it is very unlikely to be anything more serious and, even if it
was, it sounds like you have caught it very early so treatment is
likely to be very successful.
You
do need to take him to the vets to get the bump checked out. Until
your appointment with the vet I would very gently bathe the area
with dilute salted water (a pinch of salt in a biggish bowl of water
around body temperature). Bathe twice daily and obviously only attempt
this if your dog is friendly and there is no danger of him trying
to bite you.
Kind regards,
