Question
Our dog drinks excessive amounts of water. We let him out
regularly to relieve himself but sometime she toilets in the house
because he doesn’t let us know that he needs to go out. Is
this normal?

Hi
Diane,
It
is not normal for dogs to drink excessive amounts of water and if
a dog is genuinely drinking excessively it is usually a sign of
ill health. Drinking more than usual can be a sign of serious health
problems including diabetes and kidney failure. All these problems
are much easier to treat early on so please take your dog to the
vets as soon as possible.
Try
to collect a urine sample from your dog to take to the vets, and
try to work out roughly how much your dog drinks in 24 hours. You
can get an approximate idea by measuring the volume of water that
you usually put in the bowl and multiplying it by the number of
bowls your dog would usually drink in 24 hours. If it turns out
your dog is actually drinking a normal amount it could be that the
main problem is incontinence or behavioural. Either way your dog
needs to be checked over by a vet.
It
is vitally important that you ensure that your dog has free access,
at all times, to as much water as he wants to drink.
Kind regards,
Susie Samuel MA VetMB MRCVS www.vethelpdirect.com
