Vet Help Direct is an interactive website designed and run by qualified vets. Step-by-step questions help you to decide if you need to take your pet to the vets, and if so how urgently.

If your dog isn't insured yet, find out what vets recommend you look into when choosing a policy. There is a directory of pet insurers so that you can then find the best policy for you and your dog. If you aren't already registered with a vet in your area there is a directory of local vet practices. Visit www.vethelpdirect.com

Ask The Vet - Q&A
Question

I have a 13 year old castrated border terrier. Since coming back from the groomers after being hand stripped for the summer he has started to loose clumps of fur from his hind quarters and both flanks. He is not scratching or licking these areas and his skin looks healthy - maybe a little flakey in patches. He is up to date with both Frontline and Drontal. Any suggestions what it could be? I have been bathing him with anti-bacterial shampoo from my vets, which has not helped to date.

Answer
Hi Katy,

There are a few conditions that can cause hair loss without itching. One of these conditions is ringworm, a fungal infection that is contagious to humans. Normal moulting, hormone disorders and physical abrasion on the skin e.g. a poorly fitting coat, can also cause fur loss.

You do need to take your dog to the vets for an examination.

Ringworm can be passed on to other dogs, cats and humans, so in case it is ringworm, you should keep your dog away from other animals and children. Take care not use any of his brushes on other animals and wear long sleeves and gloves when handling him.

In humans ringworm usually causes a painless skin rash that is easily treated. If you or your family have any skin lesions you should go to the doctors. People whose immune systems are not working properly, such as older or ill people, can get complications from ringworm and should avoid all contact with your dog until he has been given the all clear.

If your vet is suspicious of ringworm you should let the grooming salon know so that they can take precautions to stop it from spreading.

Kind regards,

Susie Samuel MA VetMB MRCVS www.vethelpdirect.com
