Question
My white staffie was out in the sun yesterday in the park
but she also went near some nettles today she has come out in little
lumps. Could she be sunburnt or stung by nettles?

Hi
Cassandra,
The
rash that you describe could be caused by nettles, the sun, or both.
If the skin is raw, sore or the rash is getting worse you should
take her to the vets.
Sun
burn is more common in white dogs as there is less pigment in the
skin. The nose and the ears are most commonly affected as the hair
covering is sparse.
Sun
burn should obviously be avoided if possible. Not only does it make
the skin sore, it also makes it susceptible to infection and certain
types of cancers. The best way to avoid it in the future is to keep
her out of the sun, especially in the middle of the day when the
sun is at its hottest. If she goes out in the sun you should apply
sun screen to the nose, ears and any other areas where the hair
covering is sparse.
If
the rash is not looking any better in the next two days or if it
is not 100% better in two weeks you should take her to the vets.
Other more serious skin conditions can look very similar to sun
burn and nettle rash.
Kind regards,
Susie Samuel MA VetMB MRCVS www.vethelpdirect.com
