We
are all aware of the importance of human blood donors, who make
sure that blood is available and ready for use by any of us should
the need arise. To a certain extent we even take the availability
of blood for granted. If we need it then surely it will be there
for us.
| But
what happens if your dog needs a blood transfusion? Will
blood be available for them?
Diana Cruttwell found out that dogs can need blood in an
emergency as much as humans. Her Golden Retriever, Abi,
became seriously ill and needed several blood transfusions.
Luckily Diana’s other Golden Retrievers were of the
same blood type and were able to donate a unit of blood
each for Abi, saving her life.
Abi
was the lucky one though. Matching donors were available
in her time of need. Other dogs in Abi’s situation
might be less fortunate if relying on blood from strangers.
Diana, relieved at her dog’s recovery, wanted to do

what
she could to make sure that other dogs also had donor blood available
to them in an emergency. She joined forces with a veterinary specialist
to set up an online blood donor register for dogs and other animals.
This new initiative could help save many lives. The register is
web-based and “aims to bring dog blood donors to the attention
of vets, so that lives can be saved.” It is free to register
your pet as a donor.
By registering you are ensuring that your dog’s details are
accessible to vets throughout the UK. If your dog’s blood
is needed you will be contacted by a local vet from the list and,
if there is a blood match, your dog may be asked to give a unit
of blood to a dog who is in need.
