During
her search for Dolly, Candy became all too aware of the inadequacies
of the microchipping system.
Candy says “Are you aware that dogs are only scanned
if found as a stray or involved in a RTA when not with its owner?
You or I could take our new dog to a vet for its jabs or a check
up and most vets will not scan or check for tattoos. We may well
have purchased this new dog or re-homed it from a re-homing centre
in all innocence but it could well be the beloved missing pet
of someone who is desperate to find it.”
Determined to do something about this obvious loop-hole in the
dog identification system, Candy, supported by www.doglost.co.uk,
started Dolly’s Directive. The Directive requests routine
and compulsory scanning of all dogs, new or existing, by all organizations
who come into contact with dogs such as vets, police, dog pounds,
re-homing centres, and other animal welfare charities and furthermore
that they check for tattoos and other forms of identification.
What can you do to help?
There is now an e-petiton for Dolly's Directive. Please sign and
let others know about it. It is really simple to do and will only
take a minute of your time.
"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to make
it a requirement that all organisations coming in to contact with
a dog should check for permenant ID, either microchip or tattoo.
This would ensure many missing/stolen dogs would return home."
