Vulnerable Native Breeds Questionnaire

The British and Irish Breeds Dog Preservation Trust was formed in 2004 by enthusiasts concerned for the future of a number of breeds native to Britain and Ireland which they felt were lessening in popularity. The Trust monitors those breeds and endeavours to promote education and awareness.

The British & Irish Dog Breed Preservation Trust and the Kennel Club have agreed that breeds with less than 300 registrations annually are defined as Vulnerable. The British & Irish Breeds Dog Preservation Trust provides support to 28 native breeds of Great Britain and Ireland.

Dandie Dinmont Terrier Glen of Imaal Terrier Irish Terrier
Kerry Blue Terrier Lakeland Terrier Manchester Terrier
Norwich Terrier Sealyham Terrier Skye Terrier
Fox Terrier (Smooth) Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Welsh Terrier
Clumber Spaniel Curley Coated Retriever Field Spaniel
Gordon Setter Irish Red & White Setter Irish Water Spaniel
Sussex Spaniel English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan) King Charles Spaniel
Cardigan Corgi Lancashire Heeler Smooth Collie
Bloodhound Deerhound Greyhound
Otterhound

The Trust is aware that the breeds do not all have the same requirements and preservation needs. However, they feel that by highlighting all the listed breeds their futures can be best served.

Aims and Objectives of the Trust
The Trust is dedicated to preserving native breeds and seeks to do this in the following manner:

1) Educate potential owners and the public at large on the positive aspects of our native breeds. Help ensure a secure future by encouraging the ownership of these vulnerable breeds. Promote the breeds to the public who may not be aware of their existence.

2) Increase general awareness of breeds indigenous to Britain and Ireland

3) Acknowledge, particularly those breeds whose numbers may be perceived as having need of support to ensure their future.

4) Encourage the keeping of native breeds and to offer appropriate guidance and information.

5) Provide a forum for the mutual benefit of those interested in the preservation of native breeds.

Breed questionnaire
If you are an owner, breeder or exhibitor of any of the 28 breeds then why not complete the Trust's breed questionnaire. This will then be used as part of their research programme into the issues that each breed faces.

Other ways to get involved
